I remember when I grew up, we were out and about come rain, snow or sunshine! In Sweden there is an expression that says: “det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder”. When you say it, it rhymes. I have been living away for a while now though. A very vivid memory I have is when I joined a friend in Sweden to pick up her then 3 years old son from the nursery. It was winter and very cold. Definitely below 0C/32F. I looked out on the backside of the nursery as there were quite a few prams lined up outside. That is where they leave the children to have their afternoon nap in- in the cold, in the snow?! Even I was very surprised when I understood that! Of course they are properly dressed, covered and wrapped up in warm blankets. And the staff and parents are experts in how to decide what to dress their kids in. To translate the phrase- it literally means that “there is no bad weather only bad clothes”. And I do notice that here in Denmark as well. Children play outside even though it might be raining and cold. I actually think it’s quite healthy. And normally it rains a lot in the Nordics, so in order to get some sort of daylight exposure- I think this is a great attitude. But of course, you have to make sure you are properly dressed for it! So now, I am on the hunt for a good raincoat and some boots. I’ve recently discovered the Danish brand Ilse Jacobsen and become a fan of their clothing and boots:
This company was founded in 1993 and it started out with only 10 items. So today they are celebrating 25 years. This is on my wish list right now- and I really think it’ll be needed quite soon as the weather is definitely changing here! What do you think are “must have” items where you live?

“No bad weather only bad clothes” – I love that, it’s so true! My son plays outside in all weathers, it’s much healthier than being stuck inside and it’s how things are done in the country! My must have items are warm, waterproof footwear and a warm waterproof coat. A bit boring but necessary!

I agree! I think it’s very healthy and it certainly doesn’t stop kids from playing outside no matter what the weather is like. Boring perhaps to have waterproof coats and footwear- but I certainly know I’ll need them here to make sure the weather doesn’t stop my day to day!
