This bridge was built back in 1995- or that is when it started. It was completed in 1999. It cost EUR 2.6 billion and opened on July 1st in 2000. Every day about 19,000 cars- or road vehicles- cross this bridge. It connects Copenhagen to Malmo. It was first discussed way back in 1936 but the idea was put on hold during the 2nd WW. At first it couldn’t be agreed where the actual connection should be made. The narrowest point is actually between Helsingor- Helsingborg. The work was also completed ahead of the original plan despite a few set backs. One of them the discovery of 16!!! unexploded world war bombs.
It’s an incredible work of art and engineering. Quite incredible what humans can construct? Now I’m even starting to think about the pyramids and all the amazing work behind those?! But that’s for a different post. If you are ever in the neighbourhood I really recommend a crossing over. By car or train. And as I’m sure some of you know, The Bridge is one of the famous Scandi noir stories I’ve mentioned previously. I really recommend that as well. Just make sure to create some “Hygge” around you first!
